Bake or boil sweet potatoes just until tender. Cool to touch and peel. Cut into 1-inch slices and place in a buttered 2-quart baking dish.
Melt butter in a small saucepan over low heat; add remaining ingredients and bring to a boil; pour evenly over potatoes. Cover with foil and bake in a 350°F oven for 20 minutes; remove foil, baste potatoes with juice, and bake 15 to 20 minutes longer.
