Cajun Fais-Do-Do
Dance the Night Away at Your Own Fais-Do-Do
Whether you've actually experienced a Louisiana fais do-do, or merely read about one, it's only natural to want to take the party home if you don't live within easy driving distance of Cajun country. So here's the low-down for having your own fais do-do.
The first and most important step is to line up the right music; something you can shake your TABASCO® to. We've taken the guesswork out of that for you and selected some of our favorite Cajun and zydeco music CDs that are sure to keep toes tapping all night long. Top-notch bands include Boozoo Chavis, Nathan and the Zydeco Cha Chas, Filè, Rockin' Dopsie, Rosie Ledet, Beausoleil, Dewey Balfa, D.L. Menard, Buckwheat Zydeco, Clifton Chenier, and Beau Joque.
Assign two or three of your more outgoing friends to learn some Cajun dance steps ahead of time, so they can teach the steps to first-time fais-do-doers on the dance floor. The more popular dances include the Cajun Two-Step, Zydeco Two-Step, Cajun Waltz, and Cajun Jitterbug. Check out instructions here for the Cajun Two-Step.
Next, select a location. If weather permits, it could be your backyard, patio, or a picnic pavilion in a city park. Use bales of hay, benches, or folding chairs for seating. If you prefer to dance indoors, you can use your living room or basement, or rent a public facility. Just make sure you have plenty of room to boogie.
For the menu, gumbo is a must, along with all the fixins', but we've got that all taken care of for you. Our recipes are laced with just enough TABASCO® to keep you moving on the dance floor, and much of the preparation can be done ahead of time. Be sure to ice down plenty of beer and soft drinks - dancing to those squeezebox rhythms can work up a serious thirst.
Now send out the invitations and encourage everyone to bring the kids along. Not too many people are going to turn down this invitation. Aiyeee!
