“I like to go through the different seasons because each time of year has its good things.” Eula Mae Doré |
“I don’t mind the wintertime,” said Eula Mae one day, as she sipped a cup of coffee. “I like to go through the different seasons because each time of year has its good things. For instance, when we have a cold front blow in from the west, it’s a good time to make gumbo. Sometimes I make chicken and sausage gumbo; other times I like one made with local seafood. The aroma of those thick soups simmering makes me feel good all over.
“The holidays are always a special time and a busy one for me. I like being in my kitchen making holiday treats, having my daughter and her family for dinner, and helping the other families on Avery Island prepare their feasts. There are always lots of visitors, so we have to cook lots of food!”
Here are some of Eula Mae’s favorite holiday recipes:
Homemade Gingersnap Cakes
Sweet Potato Pie
Eula Mae’s Pecan Pie
Basic Pie Crust
Chocolate Bread Pudding
Deep Bayou Punch
Orange Wine
