TABASCO® & HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES CELEBRATE TEN YEARS DURING BLACK HISTORY MONTH
McIlhenny Company, manufacturer of TABASCO® brand products, and Louisiana’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are celebrating a ten-year collaboration that has taken the form of marketing internships and support of cultural and sporting events on campuses.
The program, initiated in 1999 via a marketing competition, has seen over 300 students participate as marketing interns through American Marketing Association chapters on campuses. Students are exposed to the “real world” of international brand strategy, and can have a direct impact on marketing of the product. One such example included a successful collaboration between TABASCO® and a national pizza chain in 2001 and 2002, in which a mini bottle of
Original TABASCO® brand Pepper Sauce was included with pizzas sold in the New Orleans & Baton Rouge markets.
“Our students vie for these internship opportunities because engaging in real world marketing scenarios is a valuable experience,” said Professor Joe Ricks, student advisor at Xavier University. “Our TABASCO® interns graduate from the program with great additions to their resumes because they have had a working relationship with a world recognized brand. That in turn, makes them more desirable to potential employers.”
What started as a marketing competition designed to engage students, has become so successful that it has developed into an ongoing partnership between four esteemed HBCUs and TABASCO® brand.
“McIlhenny Company is proud to celebrate Black History Month along with the 10-Year Anniversary of our HBCU Student Intern Program. Over the years, this has become a win-win initiative whereby McIlhenny Company provides the students an opportunity to work with a global brand and, in turn, the students share their energy and ideas with us as they tell the TABASCO® brand story in their own way,” said Paul McIlhenny, President of McIlhenny Company.
