The "historical and entertaining" Provisions and Politics is a cookbook that seamlessly weaves local culinary tradition with American history. First Lady Sarah Childress Polk, reputed as a wonderful entertainer and host, would have been proud that this book bears her name and sense of style. As one judge noted, "the cookbook is organized around entertaining and hosting parties, much like Mrs. Polk, who was known as a great hostess," and contains menus and historical anecdotes for Polk Spring Pilgrimage Luncheon, St. John's Whitsunday Picnic, Polk Porch Supper and Cocktail Party Buffet.

Recipes for these, and other, special occasions include Blueberry-Stuffed French Toast, Barbecued Pecans, Blue Cheese Mushrooms, Quail Stuffed with Oysters and Macaroon Pudding.
